Putting back the Pieces
This artwork represents the collaborative efforts of Claudia Nelson, its designer, and the 400 children who were able to return to St. Dominic School for the completion of the 2005-06 school year at their temporary home at Holy Rosary Church on Esplanade Avenue.

Each of those students lovingly painted one square of the canvas mosaic, which was presented to Adrianne LeBlanc, principal of the school, on the occasion of her birthday in January 2006. Inspired by the symbolic meaning of the Fleur de Lis, a beacon of hope and promise for a battered city, we await reunion with those of our community who have yet to return to us.

From devastation, destruction, and displacement in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005, has risen a “new hope.” This symbolic painting has been reproduced on t-shirts, posters, note cards, prayer cards, sun visors, caps, mugs, and tote bags. All proceeds from the sale of these items will support the school’s rebuilding efforts.
